Press release 2 July 2024

Digital Workforce, a leader in process automation services, is thrilled to announce a partnership with Sema4.ai, the pioneering enterprise AI Agent company, to integrate Sema4 AI Agents into its Outsmart business process automation platform. This marks a significant advancement in holistic business process automation, combining the strengths of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and the flexibility of Large Language Models (LLMs). AI agents enable fast and effective automation of knowledge work tasks that typically require intensive manual processes.

Revolutionizing Automation

With over nine years of experience in process automation, RPA, and Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems, Digital Workforce is at the forefront of this transformative change, where rule-based pre-trained RPA robots become more powerful when paired with GenAI-powered agents. The introduction of Sema4 AI Agents to its customers provides a new dimension of automation, going beyond tasks to processes and to complex workflows that were previously unattainable with traditional RPA alone. By harnessing the power of LLMs, Sema4 AI Agents can transform how knowledge work is executed and help create value by freeing up resources and accelerating innovation.

Seamless Integration and Enhanced Capabilities

AI Agents are designed to work seamlessly alongside existing process automation and RPA solutions and extend their capabilities. Organizations can continue leveraging their current automation technology investments while exploring expansion and new automation opportunities with AI Agents. Sema4.ai enables enterprises to build, run, and manage intelligent AI Agents by allowing teams to create built-for-purpose AI agents that can act against enterprise data and systems using LLMs.

Key features of Sema4 AI Agents include:

  • Reasoning: AI Agents break down work into smaller, manageable subtasks and plans, mimicking human thought processes.
  • Collaboration: Agents collaborate with other agents and humans using natural language, enhancing the overall workflow.
  • Actions: Leveraging automation-as-code, AI Agents can connect to enterprise data and applications to get work done.
  • Flexibility: From simple rule-based tasks to complex operations involving unstructured data, AI Agents bring a new level of flexibility to automation.
  • Resilience: AI Agents are designed to be resilient to changes, ensuring long-term reliability in dynamic environments.
  • Security: Ensuring data integrity and protection throughout automated processes.

By pairing Digital Workforce’s Outsmart Platform with Sema4.ai’s ability to power the complete AI Agent lifecycle, enterprises can now seamlessly manage, orchestrate, and monitor all their automated workflows and AI Agents processes in a secure, efficient, and effective operation.

“The GenAI-powered AI Agents within the Outsmart platform open up numerous new opportunities for automation. On average, our clients have been able to improve their profitability by 2-3% utilizing pure RPA, while 8-10% has been the state-of-the-art performance for the best. There are indications that the results can multiply with the new Agentic AI tools. The appetite for automation is growing, and Digital Workforce is committed to leading this evolution by offering the best combination of tools to achieve this. Sema4’s approach to agentic automation is unique, and with their background in open-source, data management, distributed systems, application development, and RPA, they have the right building blocks to succeed,” said Karli Kalpala, Head of Strategy Transformation at Digital Workforce.

“AI agents present a generational shift in how we build software, interact with computers, and how we expect AI to transform knowledge work. Digital Workforce is one of the pioneers in enterprise process automation, and they have seen first-hand the possibilities and the growth of the industry over the years. We think that by combining Sema4’s AI agent capabilities with Digital Workforce’s expertise in process automation, we can help organizations take advantage of this breakthrough and guide them to the new era of meaningful human-AI collaboration,” said Antti Karjalainen, Co-Founder of Sema4.ai.

Digital Workforce, a leading provider of RPA and process automation services, has secured a significant project to transfer active customer data from the Pirkanmaa Wellbeing Services County through Istekki and Atostek. The project involves extracting active customer data from eight different source systems and converting it into a format that can be easily transferred to the new Saga system by Mediconsult.

This project is the largest active social care customer data transfer project in Finland to date, with at least 78,000 active customers’ data being transferred. The Saga system, scheduled for launch in November 2024, will integrate the previous systems into a single entity. During the transition phase, it is crucial that all active and valid customer data is transferred to the new system in a reliable, smooth, and efficient manner.

“The customer and patient information systems and ICT infrastructure in the social and health care sector of Pirkanmaa welfare county are currently very fragmented. One of the biggest challenges in social care is the fragmentation of the system landscape and operational processes. Municipalities have been using separate solutions, so consolidating them into a single system is an important step toward more efficiency and improved functionality. Istekki is responsible for providing the social care system and application service for Pirkanmaa Wellbeing Services County. With Digital Workforce’s turnkey data transfer service, we can efficiently deliver data transfer as a single procurement and project, even though there are many different source systems,” said Anna-Kaisa Parviainen, Project Director at Istekki.

“We are currently working on a project to transfer passive customer data, which has also been launched in the Pirkanmaa wellbeing services county. This will benefit the customer as we can use the same RPA (Robotic Process Automation) environment in both projects, and they also involve many of the same source systems. The active data transfer is a resource-intensive project requiring deep expertise, specialized knowledge of a wide range of source systems, and project management skills. Together with Istekki, we can offer support to the Pirkanmaa wellbeing services county in the new Saga system implementation project smoothly and reliably,” says Juha Nieminen, Head of Sales Finland, Digital Workforce.

Digital Workforce’s automation solutions for the social and healthcare sector are designed to meet the needs of wellbeing services counties by automating the transfer of active and passive data quickly and reliably. Their data migration solution is a turnkey service independent of the source system, providing a cost-effective, error-free, and agile solution.

The active data migration contract for the Pirkanmaa wellbeing services county is valued at €1,395,000 for Digital Workforce.

Press release 18.6.2024
The City of Oulu stands out as a pioneer in the use of Artificial Intelligence: OuluBot uses generative AI

OuluBot is a smart, conversational AI virtual assistant that enables 24/7 service in the City of Oulu’s customer guidance and advice. Oulubot has been in production since 2022 and is continuously growing in popularity. In October 2023, Oulu was among the first municipality entities in Finland to introduce generative AI features. Generative AI is now also used to enhance OuluBot further. OuluBot is powered by Boost.ai’s conversational AI technology, with Digital Workforce and Front AI serving as the City’s service partners.

OuluBot spans a wide range of the City’s services. The virtual assistant can currently answer questions about hundreds of topics, including public transport, inquiries about lost travel cards, tourism, library, building control-related topics, general advice on welfare services, and many others.

Today, OuluBot employs 22 people, most of whom are AI trainers working on training the AI model. Last autumn, new features based on a large language model (LLM) from Boost.ai were made available to Oulu’s AI trainers. These features have allowed them to teach the AI and generate responses for the bot much more quickly and efficiently.

A more recent development in Oulu this spring was the introduction of generative AI. Generative AI enables OuluBot to independently answer questions based on the information it gathers, for example, from the municipality’s website. In addition to the municipality’s website, the bot can search for information from the North Ostrobothnia Welfare Region’s (Pohde) website, and, if necessary, the search can be extended to the websites of other actors who promote the well-being of the municipality’s citizens.

OuluBot is one of the first government services worldwide to use generative AI autonomously to use existing content for independent learning. Independent learning allows OuluBot’s scope to be extended almost without limit to all services provided by the City and other selected service providers. The main task of the AI Trainers will be to monitor the quality of the answers produced by Generative AI and the accuracy of the source material it uses.

“We are proud to be at the forefront of digitalization in the municipal sector and to set an example using Generative AI. The City of Oulu is responsible for several services that residents, businesses, and tourists have many questions about. Large language models allow us to add new topics to OuluBot’s repertoire faster than before and to answer general questions better, which will significantly improve the customer experience. All this is done in a safe and controlled way,” says Veli-Matti Keloneva, Development Director.

“Oulu has the best virtual assistant of any city in Finland. They were the first to test Boost.ai’s LLM features last autumn and are already using generative AI extensively. Many other customers are still in the exploratory stage with these technologies, but Oulu has already come a long way,” states Jari Annala, CEO, Front AI.

“It’s great to see how OuluBot continues to expand and develop. As a result of the breakthrough in generative AI, people are much more willing and used to talking to virtual assistants. Oulu is in an excellent position to leverage these changes with its years of experience in conversational AI, the culture of continuous innovation, and customer-centric approach,” says Jussi Vasama, CEO, Digital Workforce.

OuluBot is hosted at https://www.ouka.fi/ and can also chat in the Oulu dialect.

Digital Workforce implements a Robotic Process Automation (RPA) solution to migrate active customer data in the North Savo Wellbeing Services County

Digital Workforce, a leading provider of RPA and process automation services, announces it has been awarded a project to migrate active customer data in the North Savo wellbeing services county through partners Istekki and Atostek. The work involves extracting active customer data from five different source systems and converting it into a format that can be easily transferred to the new Saga system by Mediconsult.

The source systems are SosiaaliEffica, Pegasos, Proconsona OMNI, Lifecare, and Aura. At least 16,000 active clients’ data will be transferred, possibly twice that number. Saga, to be launched in January 2025, will integrate the legacy systems into a single entity. During the transition phase, all active and valid customer data must be transferred to the new system in a reliable, smooth, and efficient way.

“Data migration is a project that requires resources and expertise. The project requires specialized skills and project management capabilities. Together with Digital Workforce, we can support the North Savo wellbeing services country in this new system implementation project smoothly and reliably,” says Project Manager Anna-Kaisa Parviainen from Istekki.

“A major consolidation of customer and patient information systems is underway in Finland, intending to achieve significant savings, easier information flow, improved patient safety, and working time savings for social and health care personnel. With our expertise and specialized knowledge, we can support Istekki and its end-customer, the wellbeing services county of North Savo, in the best possible way in the upcoming transition to the Saga customer information system. Active data transfer has many special characteristics, including the critical cutover phase. A substantial amount of full-time specialist resources are required for a short period of time: it may be necessary to transfer all customer and patient data to the new system over, for example, one weekend,” says Juha Nieminen, Head of Sales Finland, Digital Workforce.

Digital Workforce’s automation solutions for the social and healthcare sector are designed to meet the needs of wellbeing services counties by automating the transfer of active and passive data quickly and reliably. Our data migration solution is a turnkey service independent of the source system. Cost-effective, error-free, and agile, Digital Workforce’s automation-based migration service has already been selected for use in almost half of Finland’s wellbeing services counties.

Cancer Care Follow-up automation developed by a Finnish company improves patient safety and aims to save hundreds of millions of euros

Digital Workforce, a Finnish process automation services company, has developed a multi-technology automation solution for breast cancer follow-up for a Nordic university hospital. The solution aims to improve patient safety, free up human resources, reduce queues, and enable personalized care pathways.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and its treatment has evolved significantly in recent decades. Follow-up care is a vital part of treatment, allowing early detection of cancer recurrence.

The follow-up, which includes regular clinical examinations and imaging like mammography, spans 5 to 9 years. This multi-year follow-up, organized using traditional methods, is laborious and error-prone, posing a risk to patient safety.

A globally pioneering solution implemented in a Nordic university hospital in spring 2024 –
Savings potential in Western countries measured in hundreds of millions of euros

An innovative solution developed by Digital Workforce to manage and automate breast cancer follow-up care was launched at a Nordic university hospital in the spring of 2024. The developed solution, Cancer Care Follow-up Automation and Management (CFAM), is globally the first of its kind.

CFAM automates the follow-up process and enables creating and managing personalized care paths for each patient. The solution, developed on a cloud platform, provides a secure and scalable environment and can be integrated with any electronic medical record system. The same solution can also be easily applied to the follow-up of other types of cancers and long-term illnesses.

CFAM has already attracted the interest of several medical institutions in Europe and the US. In Western countries, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers, and the costs of follow-up care are measured in the hundreds of millions of euros.

“We are proud to be a trusted partner to the healthcare industry in the development of clinical processes and patient care pathway management. CFAM, launched this spring, guarantees personalized and timely care for all patients, enabling healthcare professionals to prioritize those with elevated health risks. CFAM’s significance extends beyond breast cancer, as it addresses challenges common to the follow-up care of many long-term conditions.,” says Jussi Vasama, CEO of Digital Workforce.

The solution aims to deliver significant improvements for patients and healthcare providers

As the aging population drives an increase in cancer and long-term illnesses, healthcare providers face mounting pressure to enhance efficiency and cut costs. CFAM offers a solution to the challenge, enabling healthcare organizations to save millions while bolstering patient safety and providing real-time information to patients and caregivers.

By expediting access to care and test result communication, CFAM facilitates swift responses to abnormal findings and liberates staff time for patients needing urgent specialist attention. Automating follow-up enhances patient safety by mitigating key-person dependencies and opportunities for manual errors, ensuring continuous and consistent surveillance.

Additionally, CFAM improves patients’ involvement, allowing them to choose their preferred checkup time and method in the patient portal and to make changes to their bookings if necessary. Patients’ participation in booking and changing their appointments saves medical staff time by eliminating work associated with bookings, changes, and uncancelled appointments while simultaneously enabling patients’ autonomy and convenience.

CEO Jussi Vasama:

“I am very pleased with the progress the company is making in implementing its strategy for profitable growth. The efficiency measures and successes in new sales at the end of 2023 supported a clear financial turnaround and are reflected in improved financial results in the first quarter.

The improvement in results compared to the previous year’s trend is significant. The success of the investments made and the good development of the operational activities is particularly well illustrated by the fact that the comparative figures for the first quarter of 2023 include EUR 0.5 million of product development support from Business Finland and product development activations, with no corresponding entries in the follow-up period.

The company continued to grow its business, particularly in the Healthcare sector and North America. This reflects the competitiveness of the company’s Outsmart service offering and the predictability of its Continuous Services in a generally difficult IT services market.  I see a good start to the year and successes in both new sales and existing customers as a good basis for accelerating profitable growth in the coming quarters.”

Digital Workforce and Atostek secure a significant contract for legacy data conversion and migration services

Digital Workforce and 2M-IT’s contract partner Atostek will provide a SaaS service for converting and migrating customer and patient data for four Welfare Regions. The total number of systems to be migrated is more than 130. 2M-IT Oy will procure the SaaS -service system as part of its own service provision and production for customers. Atostek and Digital Workforce will act as subcontractors to 2M-IT Oy. The signed contract does not contain a minimum purchase obligation.

The acquired service will be used at the Welfare Regions of Varsinais-Suomi, Satakunta, Pohjanmaa, and Kanta-Häme. The decision to introduce the service was taken by the decision-making body of each Welfare Region. The first agreed-upon projects are due to start in June.

The Welfare Regions of Varsinais- Suomi, Satakunta, Pohjanmaa, and Kanta-Häme have more than 130 transferrable systems in 27 source systems. The contract addresses a substantial portion of Finland’s total number of archivable social- and healthcare systems, estimated to be 800-1000. The quicker the data from the old systems is archived, the sooner the Welfare Regions can relinquish their administrative duties concerning the legacy systems.

“We have delivered dozens of migration projects to Welfare Regions since January 2023. Together with Atostek, we have already migrated almost 2 million documents. We’re experienced with nearly all source systems in Finland’s Welfare Regions, offering a highly efficient cloud solution independent of source systems, powered by software robotics. Additionally, we boast the country’s most experienced team of migration experts. The cooperation with Atostek has been excellent. This is our first major collaboration with 2M-IT, and we look forward to working with them. 2M-IT has a solid position as a contract partner in the healthcare sector”, says Juha Järvi, Digital Workforce, Global Head of Global Healthcare.

“Together with Digital Workforce, we have successfully built a cost-effective, high-quality solution for the Welfare Regions to transfer data reliably and efficiently to Kela’s Kanta archive. Working together has allowed both parties to focus on their core competencies and brought flexibility in resourcing. It is great to be involved in building the future of social welfare and healthcare in Finland,” says Miika Parvio, Business Director of Atostek ERA Services.
